Meet Our Judges

Dawn Sweeney, Managing Director of North Notts Newspapers Ltd

Dawn has spent her career working within the business to business magazine and regional newspaper media for over 25 years.

Prior to joining the Chad in August 2008 as Managing Director, Dawn spent 4 years as Advertisement Director of Yorkshire Post Newspapers and prior to that 13 years with the Birmingham Post & Mail, publishers of the Birmingham Post and Birmingham Evening Mail Newspapers. 

Dawn is married to Alec with two children, Connor, 17 and Megan, 11.

Asha Khemka OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield

Born and raised in India, she married at 15 and moved to Britain in 1978 with her husband Shankar. After raising their three children, Asha gained a business degree and embarked on a career as a college lecturer.

She quickly ascended the management ranks and since taking the helm at West Notts in 2006, Asha has transformed it into one of the top colleges in the country.

It was judged outstanding by Ofsted inspectors in 2008 and earlier this year was awarded Beacon status and Best Companies accreditation. In July, Asha collected an OBE from Buckingham Palace for her services to education.

Andrew Tucker, Mansfield District Council's Cultural Services Manager

Andrew Tucker has been responsible for the running of Mansfield Palace Theatre since 1994, which was then known as the Civic Theatre - shortly after emigrating to England from his native South Africa.

Since then he has played a huge role in helping to transform the venue into one of the most successful theatres in the country - attracting record attendances each year for its pantos and higher than average visitor numbers for other performances.

He oversaw the £2m revamp of the theatre in 1997 and is currently leading preparations for its centenary in 2010.

David Fisher, former Mansfield Building Society Chief Executive

David Fisher was chief executive of Mansfield Building Society for 27 years before retiring last year.

Before his retirement, he was the longest serving building society chief executive and during his reign MBS's assets increased from £33m to £286m.

David is a former chairman of the Building Societies Association Midlands/West Region, an ex-regional chairman of the Building Societies Institute and a past secretary of the National Home Improvements Scheme.

Before coming to Mansfield in 1981, David worked for NatWest in Cheshire and also had stints at the Portman and Midshires building societies.

John Sankey MBE, Mansfield Estate Agent

John is one of Mansfield's best known businessmen having run his town centre estate agents for 40 years.

Born in Stanton Hill, he is also chairman of governors at High Oakham School and the newly-elected chairman of the Mansfield BID steering group. In addition, he is a vice-chairman and founder member of the Mansfield Town Centre Partnership and also a founder member of business networking organisation Mansfield 2010 - which is now 2020.

He was awarded an MBE for services to the community in 2006.

Howard Baggaley OBE, Chairman of Baggaley Group Ltd

Howard is the grandson of the company's founder Herbert Baggaley, and has worked at Baggaley for over 50 years. Commencing as an Assistant Wages Clerk progressing to Contract Management and then coming through the ranks to become a director in 1966, and then Chairman in 1970. In 2008 he took a step back from the Construction side of the business, but remains as Baggaley Group Ltd Chairman.

He has led Baggaley to the forefront of the construction industry within the Midlands and Yorkshire. Highly motivated towards the development of both his own staff and the construction industry generally, Howard is a national Board Member of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Howard has recently been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday 2009 Honours List, for services to Training and Business.
