The Cake

Wedding cake is as much a traditional part of the wedding as the bride being late and the best man fluffing his speech. Ceremonies just wouldn't be the same without the cutting of the cake.

Wedding cakes can come in so many different styles, sizes, shapes and flavours… that the list is endless. We all know what our favourite type of cake is, so why do people worry about what the guests might like? A traditional wedding cake would be a  fruit cake, with white icing and beautifully decorated, but here are a few alternatives:

Chocolate-almond cake, chocolate ganache, and mocha buttercream
Coconut cake and lime buttercream
Hazelnut-almond cake, chocolate ganache, and raspberries
White spongecake, lemon buttercream, and raspberries
Lemon cake, lemon curd, and vanilla buttercream
Chocolate devil’s food cake, vanilla buttercream, and raspberries

Questions To Ask The Cake Baker

Selecting the right person to bake your wedding cake is very important to ensure that you get exactly what you are looking for in a wedding cake. Here are some questions to ask prospective wedding cake bakers, which will help you in making the right choice.

Ask for a Tasting
Ask the confectioner if they are willing to offer you a tasting before you order the wedding cake. Don’t forget about any dietary requirements your wedding guests may have (it is often best to avoid nuts just in case). Once you settle on a particular baker, put down everything in writing and have them confirm it so that there is no room for any confusion later on.

Ask about Custom Cakes
Find out if the baker can design a cake from your design or from a picture. Also ask if they charge any extra fee for such a service.

See the Portfolio
Ask the baker to show you a portfolio or pictures of wedding cakes that they have previously made to help you to determine if you like the baker's style and creativity.

Cake Preparation
Ask the baker when they will be baking and icing your cake. The icing on the cake should be done no more than 2 days before the wedding, as this ensures the freshest of cakes.

Cake size
Tell the baker how many guests will be having a piece of cake. They will be able to advise you on the size of cake you will need. Remember there may be people who can’t make the wedding that you would like to send a piece of cake to. Special boxes are available to do this.

Shape of the wedding cake
Go for unusual shapes for your wedding cake instead of the regular round or  rectangle. A heart shaped cake is great for romantics, whereas wedding cakes in the shape of flower petals will look different and are perfect if you are having a garden themed wedding.

Delivery and Set-up
Ask the confectioner if they only deliver the cake or do they even set it up. Also inquire if there are any additional charges for setting up the cake.

Cupcake Wedding Cakes
A great way to have a unique wedding cake, and save money at the same time, is to have cupcakes for your wedding cake. You can get these made in different flavours and then arrange these on tiers to make your wedding cake.

Cutting the Cake
Many couples are now forgoing the tradition of cutting the wedding cake. But cutting the wedding cake can provide you with an excellent opportunity for photographs as well as a romantic moment which can be cherished for years to come. The first cut of the wedding cake symbolises the couples shared future.

The correct way to cut the cake is for the bride to hold the knife in her right hand and the groom’s hand closes over the top of hers. With the knife turned upside down (for luck) cut the first slice together. Make sure that your caterer has already cut through the icing to prevent you cake from toppling over.
